Most of us are fond of playing Lost planet, DMC4 games on computer machine. But have you tried taking screenshot of games in Dx10 mode? If you run these games in Dx10 mode you won’t be able to take any screenshot, even if you press ‘Print Screen’ button and paste in MS Paint it will be pasted as a black picture. If you are a serious gamer, and want to capture your finest moments on video as screenshot then fraps is the right solution for you.

Fraps is a Windows application that can be used to take screenshots of games that use DirectX or OpenGL graphic technology. Once it captures the screenshot it automatically name the file with timestamp. Fraps is commonly used to determine a computer’s performance with a game, as well as record gaming footage and capture screenshots.

Fraps can capture real-time audio and video up to 2560×1600 with custom frame rates from 10 to 100 frames per second. All movies are recorded in outstanding quality. The application captures audio and video fastest with an NVIDIA GeForce or ATI Radeon graphics card.

The freeware version of Fraps places an irremovable Fraps watermark at the top of every video, and each recorded video is limited to 30 seconds in length. Screenshots are not watermarked in the free version but can only be taken in the BMP format.

The Full version of Fraps costs around 37 USD perform full-size recording with no watermarks on your movie and capture screenshots directly to JPG, PNG and TGA formats.

How to use the screenshots option in Fraps-

  • Click the ‘Change’ button to select the folder to store the screenshots. ‘View’ button shows the current contents of the folder.
  • You can assign a button in ‘Screen Capture Hotkey’ that will take a screenshot of the game screen. To change the Hotkey, click in the box and type a new key, say F8. If you click ‘Disable’ the Hotkey will be disabled.
  • Selecting “Include frame rate overlay on screenshots” will include the Fraps frame rate counter on your screenshots. If the frame rate overlay is disabled, no counter will be saved on your screenshots.

Screenshots can be saved in Windows Bitmap (BMP), JPEG (JPG), Portable Network Graphics (PNG), or Targa (TGA) format. Fraps can take the screenshots of games running at resolutions of up to 2560×1600.

Before using Fraps make sure that you use DirectX or OpenGL as a runtime system. Programs that run in Windows without DirectX or OpenGL are not supported. Fraps cannot capture desktop applications under Windows 2000 and XP. In Windows Vista the Aero desktop runs through DirectX and can be captured by Fraps.

Fraps supports Windows OS (Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista and x64 Editions).
